Are you paying attention?

About a year ago Britton and I went on a four day retreat together.  We packed up our SUV and headed out on a familiar highway we have driven many times before.  About an hour away from our destination, as we rounded a curve, the rear tires began to slip and we started to fishtail.  I tried to compensate, but before I knew it we were doing a 360 down the middle of the highway, crossing the centre line and ultimately coming to rest in the ditch on the other side of the road. I had driven that road many times before and never had a problem. What was different about this time?

When I spoke with our insurance company about the incident, the agent was quick to tell me it was my fault.  I bristled and debated with the agent about whether it really was my fault, but in the end I had to agree that it was my fault.  I hadn’t been paying enough attention to the condition of the road.  It was a beautiful day, the sun was out, the snow was melting, and slush was building up on the road.  I didn’t realize at the time that the slush hid a layer of ice.  Even though I wasn’t speeding, I was still going too fast for the conditions as I came around the the curve.  If only I had paid more careful attention, what happened could have been avoided.

Has something ever happened to you and then you realize afterwards that it could have been avoided if you had paid more attention?

Over the last number of weeks we’ve been talking about regrets and how to deal with the regrets that we all carry around with us.  We’ve talked about recognizing, releasing and redeeming our regrets.  This week as we wrap up our ‘Starting Over’ series we are going to look at how we can keep ourselves from racking up regrets in the first place.  I hope you’ll join us this Sunday as Brad Crassweller speaks on 1 Timothy 4:16 and shows us how by paying attention we can keep ourselves out of the ditch and away from regret.

See you Sunday!
