Have you ever made a mistake?

About a year ago, when I was downtown for a meeting, I made a mistake and didn’t realize it.  After the meeting I was on my way back to my car which was parked nearby at a meter.  As I got closer to the car I pulled out my key fob and hit the button to unlock my doors.  I heard the usual thunk as the door locks unlocked. After a few more steps I reached for the door handle, opened the door, and climbed in.

Immediately I knew something was wrong.  The seat was all the way forward and I was uncomfortable.  On top of that someone had thrown a towel on the passenger seat and hung something from the rear view mirror.  I could tell someone had been in my car, but how?  I am always careful to lock it when I park.  As I tried to figure out who might have been in my car, I reached for the ignition  but my key wouldn’t fit.

At that moment I realized this wasn’t my car.  My Silver Chevy Equinox LT was parked directly in front of the Silver Chevy Equinox LT that I was currently sitting in.  Embarrassed, I quickly got out and looked around to see if anyone had noticed my mistake. I got in my car and sped away.

Have you ever made a mistake?

Sometimes we make mistakes but we don’t realize it.  Until I recognized I had made a mistake I was going nowhere. I would still be sitting in that car, wondering why it wouldn’t start.

Last weekend we started a new series called “Starting Over.”  This series is all about learning to love and live beyond our regrets.  Like mistakes we don’t know about, regrets we don’t recognize can keep us from moving forward.  This weekend we are going to explore the story of  someone who had an unrecognized regret and the problems it caused him.  Through David’s story we are going to discover how to recognize our regrets and begin to move forward.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
