What are you doing this weekend?

What are you doing this weekend?

There is always lots to do on the weekend, isn’t there?  It may be chores and maintenance around the house,  catching up on some overdue paperwork, taking your sweetie out for a night on the town, or driving your kids to all their activities.   You never lack for something to do, right?  (If you do there is always season 2 of The Crown on Netflix to catch up on).

Let me rephrase my opening question. What are you doing to grow your faith this weekend?

In Philippians 2:12, the Apostle Paul writes, “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence – continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”  Paul is saying  that we need to do things to grow our faith. There are things we need to learn about, things we need to do to grow closer to God, so that we will become mature in our faith.  We need to make this “work” of growing our faith a priority. If it’s not a priority we will let it slide. We’ll say, “tomorrow” or “next week” and put it on the back burner.  If we don’t focus on working out our salvation we’ll drift, and no one ever drifts toward maturity. We always drift away from maturity, away from God.

For the last month we have been talking on Sundays about our Holy Spirit Encounter weekend.  The Holy Spirit Encounter weekend is a chance for you to “work out” your salvation and discover more of the fullness and power of God in your life.  If there was only one church event you attended this year, the Holy Spirit Encounter is the one I would wish for you. (I say this knowing that we are just about to start our Going Beyond Capital Campaign and all its activities).

I want to encourage you to attend the Holy Spirit Encounter this Saturday, beginning at 8:30 am.  Dr. Rob Reimer from Nyack Seminary will lead us in discovering how to live a Spirit-empowered life.  You’ll discover who Holy Spirit is, what Holy Spirit does and the gifts Holy Spirit gives believers so we can help each other and live as Jesus envisions.   Check out our website for more information and the complete schedule.

There are lots of things you could do this weekend. Perhaps God is whispering that this is one thing that needs to be done this weekend.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
