Rooted in a Restless World: An Exploration of Ephesians

‘Sent’

Ephesians 1:1-2

Leaders:

Prayerfully read the questions below and discern which questions might work for your group. You do not need to go through them all, but always move your questions towards application.

Connect:

  1. Open in prayer.
  2. Have you ever sent an email and then regretted sending it? Share the story.

Discussion:

  1. Paul describes himself as an Apostle by the will of God. The term Apostle means, ‘Sent’ Why would this term be important for Paul to state? Have you ever been sent by someone to give a message to another? Share the story.
  2. While not all Christians will be Apostles, everyone is sent. Share a time where you felt God sent you, or led you to do something. What question would you want to ask God about why he has sent you? Or where has he sent you? Or what has he sent you with?
  3. Paul describes the people in Ephesus as ‘Holy’. This does not necessarily mean they are morally pure, but set apart for Christ. Do you believe you are Holy in this way? Why or why not?
  4. Paul offers peace to his readers from God the Father. Paul contrasts the Roman Emperor, who was considered a father who brings peace through conquering his enemies, with God the Father, who sent His Son to conquer evil through the sacrifice of His Son. However, this did not bring a peace that resembles comfort; this is a peace that brings wholeness to a person, regardless of their circumstances.
  5. In groups of 3 or 4, where might you currently lack this sense of peace in your life? What do you feel stressed, anxious, fearful, or worried about? These emotions may help you identify where you need peace and what you need it for.
  6. Invite everyone to read Eph 1 once a day, every day this week, as preparation for next week.

Prayer:

  1. Share prayer requests and pray over one another. Feel free to break into smaller groups.
