Are you looking for the perfect leader?

In 2004 a friend recommended a book to me; it was the book Good to Great by Jim Collins. In Good to Great, Collin discusses the type of focus and leadership required to lead an organization or business from being good to being great. One of the critical things Collins identifies in his book is the type of leader that great organizations have; he calls these leaders “Level 5 Leaders.” Collin’s definition of a “Level 5 Leader” stuck with me because it sounded like the perfect leader. The “Level 5 Leader” sounded like someone I should be following, and Collin’s book gave me hope that such a leader existed.

Ever since I’ve been looking for the perfect “Level 5 Leader.” If I’m honest, I’ve been looking for the perfect leader for a long time, way before I read Collins’ book. I’ve been looking for the perfect leader pretty much my entire life. I’ve come close a couple of times, but each time I got close to the person I thought was the perfect leader, they ended up letting me down or disappointing me in some way.

Are you looking for the perfect leader? I think we all are. I think that’s why we change Prime ministers, Premiers, Mayors, Community Leaders, Party Leaders, bosses and pastors, etc. We change leaders so often because the leaders we thought were perfect always disappoint or let us down. Have you ever been let down by a leader? Where can we find a leader that won’t let us down or disappoint us? Where can we find a leader worthy of following?

This weekend we are continuing our Creed series, and we are looking at what it means to say that Jesus is human. This Sunday, we’ll be exploring what Hebrews 2 has to say about Jesus, and we are going to discover that Jesus is the leader we’ve been looking for. I hope you’ll join us in person or online as we discover that Jesus is the perfect leader because he became human.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk
