Do you remember the 80’s?

When I was a teen, there was a group of people that seemed unstoppable. They stood strong in the face of intense opposition. They prevailed against everyone they faced. Nothing, and no one, could defeat them. They were the Edmonton Oilers, unstoppable in the 80’s (hard for this Flames fan to admit).

The Oilers did incredible things in the 80’s in the world of hockey. In 1984 they won the Stanley Cup Championship, becoming the first team in Western Canada to bring home the cup since 1926. They would go on to win four Championships in that decade. A 2006 poll listed the 1988 Oiler team as one of the top five professional sports teams of the past 120 years.

When I think about the Oilers, there is one person who always comes to mind – Wayne Gretzky, the Great One. However, a team is made up of more than just one person. Gretzky did not win all those championships by himself; a lot of people worked together to achieve this.

What made the Oilers unstoppable in the 80’s? The Oilers was a group of unstoppable individuals who chose to work together. Gretzky scored 87 goals while working alongside Jari Kurri, who scored 52 goals. Together they worked alongside Glen Anderson who scored 54 goals, all in the same year – they became the first team in the history of the NHL to do this. That’s what made the Oilers unstoppable in the 80’s. They were a group of unstoppable people who worked together to become an unstoppable movement in hockey.

This weekend we are wrapping up our “Unstoppable” series by exploring Acts 11:19-29 and Acts 13:1-3. We will be looking at another group of people who were unstoppable. By working together, they created an unstoppable movement. I hope you’ll join us this Sunday as we discover the unstoppable vision that Jesus has for his church today.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Kirk

P.S., This Sunday at 10:30 am we will take a portion of our service to say farewell to Pastor Colin, Pastor Daniel, and Chandra as they leave to follow God’s calling elsewhere. We will also recognize Pastor Daniel’s completion of the ordination process. I hope you’ll join us as we thank God for our friends and pray his blessing upon them. Because of this there will be no 8:30 am service.

P.S.S. In December there will only be 8:30 am worship gatherings on Sunday December 12 and 19. We are currently evaluating whether to continue the 8:30 am gathering in January. Stay tuned for more information later in December.
