  1. Consider a time when you were extremely thirsty. What emotions and desires did that stir within you? How did you alleviate that intense thirst?
  1. Why do you think Jesus uses the imagery of hungering and thirsting in this beatitude rather than, say, the imagery of seeking, pursuing, or acquiring? What does this imagery convey?
  2. Why is a hunger and thirst for righteousness just as important as physical hunger and thirst? What practices, or neglect of practices, often lead to a lukewarm spiritual appetite in your life?
  3. Read Ex 33:18, Ps 63:1 and Phil 3:10. What can we learn from the lives of Moses, David, and Paul about hungering and thirsting for righteousness?
  4. From Jer 15:16, Matt 19:16-22, Isa 26:9 and 1 Pet 2:2, what characterizes the life of one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness? What other Scriptures can you think of that relate to this?
  5. From Matt 6:31-22 and Ps 34:10, what is the result of hungering and thirsting after righteousness? How does the promise of satisfaction motivate you to pursue righteousness in a world that is often at odds with our pursuit? How might your pursuit of righteousness be a catalyst for conversations about faith?
