Marks of the Messiah – The Defining Moment – Discussion Guide

Marks of the Messiah
The Defining Moment

Pastor Kirk, January 13, 2019

Scripture:  Mark 1:2-13

Summary:    Baptism is an act that identifies kingdom citizens, a moment when God reveals his heart for you and is the fulfillment of part of God’s plan for you.

Main Thought:  Baptism is a mark of the Messiah

Getting to Know Each Other (Start Here):

  • Have you ever had a defining moment?

A defining moment is a moment that transforms your way of thinking,
defines your actions and sets a new course for your life.

Going Deeper:

  1. Have you ever been baptized? If so, share the story of your baptism.  Explain why baptism is important or unimportant to you.
  2. What does it mean to repent? How are baptism and repentance connected?  What does repentance look like in your life?
  3. In Mark 1:7-8 John speaks about Jesus and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. How does water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Spirit fit together?  What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?
  4. In each of the Mark and Matthew’s accounts, the baptism of Jesus immediately precedes Jesus’ time in the wilderness (Mark 1:12-13, Matthew 4:1-11). Why? What happens in the wilderness and why would Jesus need to be baptized first?
  5. Pastor Kirk said that baptism is a moment of revelation when God reveals his heart for you. Do you agree?  Was this your experience?  How does Matthew 10:32 relate to Pastor Kirk’s statement?  Why is this revelation important?

Apply it:

  • What is the Holy Spirit saying to you? What do you need to do as a result of what he is saying to you?

Pray without ceasing:

  • Pray for the 12 people who were baptized over the weekend that they would be encouraged this week and hear God’s voice as he speaks to them about his love for them.
  • Pray for the 30 participants of the Kairos Course this week.
  • Pray for MidWeek which resumes on Wednesday.
